City of Boston: Public Health Alert 01/10/2013

Yesterday, Mayor Menino declared a public health emergency due to the high number of influenza cases in the City of Boston. Residents are urged to get vaccinated if they have not done so already by calling their doctor, or visiting a nearby community health center during a free vaccination clinic. The elderly, young children, and people with other health issues can get very sick with influenza, so it’s particularly important for these groups to be vaccinated. Avoid getting sick by washing your hands thoroughly, not touching your eyes, nose or mouth, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. If you develop illness with a fever, be sure to rest, drink plenty of fluids, and please, stay at home. Contact your doctor for additional guidance, especially if you are in one of the high risk groups. To find your nearest free flu vaccination clinic, please call the Mayor’s Health Line at 617-534-5050, or visit bphc.org/flu.

The city recommends residents call the Mayor’s Health Line at 617-534-5050, from 9 a.m. to 5p.m., Monday through Friday, or the Mayor’s 24-hour Hotline at 617-635-4500, after hours.

To avoid getting or spreading the flu, the city recommends the following steps:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing. If water is not nearby, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can spread this way.
As much as possible, avoid close contact with people who are sick.
If you have a fever or feel ill, stay home.
